If you ever dreamed of becoming a dog trainer or are currently teaching in a canine educational setting, this is the workshop for you.  Explore or expand your understanding of dog handling with one of the world's most sought after behaviorists and educator.

John Rogerson

Course Description

This course covering a module of the Kennel Club Scheme (the British version of the AKC), aims to show appreciation of the complexities involved in teaching, widen experience, understanding and knowledge, increase range of teaching methods and learning styles, show understanding of the many aspects common across areas and encourage self assessment, reflection and improvement.

This is a course that is essential for anyone who is either instructing or about to begin instructing in training classes. It is also essential for anyone engaged in Canine Behaviour Therapy and currently going through the Kennel Club Accreditation scheme. The course correctly examines all of the issues involved in the modern reward based training systems, so misunderstood and abused by many instructors practicing today. Both learning theory and practical applications are taught to students who will be working with rescue dogs during the course. There will be an opportunity to judge a competition and put the rescue dog that you will be working with on this course through the AKC Good Citizen scheme.

Travel and Accommodations

Great Dog is located in the Northgate neighborhood of Seattle and is approximately 9 miles north of downtown.  We are conveniently located right off of I-5.  For driving directions, please click here.

Our friends at the Nexus Hotel, a hop hop skip and a jump from Great Dog, have graciously given our guests an incredible workshop deal. True to Seattle's love for pets, the Nexus Hotel is pet friendly!  But really, other than the Nexus there aren't a ton of hotels nearby, there are a few dive motels over on Hwy 99....  To make reservations and obtain more information about the Nexus Hotel just follow the links!  And, don't forget to tell them you are part of the Great Dog John Rogerson Seminar or you won't get the screaming deal!

Parking is a premium here at Great Dog.  We are looking into an alternative location to host this event.  Should we have it at Great Dog, street parking is available and we will have signs indicating where to park.  Please do not block any driveways or park in any business, condos, etc where there is not a Great Dog sign.  Please refer to your registration packet for more specific details.

The Fine Print

Dogs: Dogs that are signed up workshops.  Please plan on leaving your dog at home on those days.  If you must travel with your dog, our daycare has a limited space available (at $30 per day).  Pre-registration is required and all of our standard daycare requirements must be met (ie not aggressive, proof of vaccinations including bordatella, etc.)  See Daycare Rules and Regs for additional info.  Dogs that do not pass our evaluation that first day, dogs who are aggressive or excessively loud, will be asked to leave....which could put you in a pickle.  In those cases, dogs may be confined to their car, weather permitting.  However, please keep in mind that we are in an urban environment and have very close neighbors, so if they are noisy, please be prepared.  Also, cleaning up after your dog is the law.  Any individual not abiding by our scoop laws will be asked to leave the workshop.  And we don't have a refund policy.  Pretty poopy, eh?

Workshop Dogs:  Dogs attending our workshop must be indicated at time of reservation.  Any dogs that attend our workshop must be under control, not loud and not dog or people aggressive.  It is imperative that you work only one dog during the workshop as space is somewhat limited and information/skills will be expanded upon throughout the four days.  As any good dog steward, you are responsible for your pup's behavior and actions.  If you wish to be assigned a dog to work with, we will be happy to do so.  We have some wonderful dogs with varying degrees of temperament and skill levels.  After registration, a follow up email conversation/interview will give us insight on which dog might be the best fit to achieve the goals you set.  You will be notified of name, breed and basic information prior to assignment.  These assigned dogs are loved members of our daycare clients who have asked for more extensive education for their pups.  Some assigned dogs will be from the Seattle Animal Shelter and are available for adoption.

Parking: Parking is always a challenge in urban environments.  We also are neighbors with a costume business and this is their busiest time of year.  We anticipate a shortage in parking.  For those that stay at the Nexus Hotel, they have offered free shuttle services.  We will also have reserved parking in a nearby lot but plan on hoofing it a maximum of 2 blocks.  There will be more than likely different lots on different days, so if you come to play with us multiple days, please observe our parking signs.  Those that have a state issued handicap parking pass and plan on driving, please let us know in advance to insure accessible parking.

Cellphones: We all have those ring-a-ling devices that we wouldn't know how to function without.  They are great tools, but can be very rude to our presenters.  Please silence your cellphones, pagers and blackberries.  If you must take a call, please step out of the presentation to do so.  If you must carry on a conversation with your co-attendees, please don't disrupt the rest of us.  Please take the gift for gab outside or into another space.

VideoTaping & AudioTaping:  Videotaping and audiotaping the program is not allowed.

ChairsOur chairs are metal or plastic folding style.  If you desire a more cushiony option, please bring one from home.  Please do not bring the couch as we can't accommodate oversized chairs or highbacked ones that will limit everyone else's viewing.

Babies: Um, we are a DOG daycare and haven't a clue how to accommodate babies and little children.  Please leave the little two legged kids at home.  Thanks!

Refund Policy:  All registration must be paid in full, in advance.  You may pay with credit card, paypal or check.  Payment must be received no later than Friday, Sept 26, 2008 at 2pm Pacific.  The next business day, following your online interest submission, you will be contacted via email for payment information.  Full refunds will be honored up until Friday, Sept 26 at 2pm Pacific time.

What to bring: Paper notebooks to take copious notes, pens/pencils and dress in layers as Oct in Seattle is known for cool mornings.  If you are participating in the hands on workshops with your dog, please bring yummy treats, bait bags, dog beds and poop bags as well as any other "doggie needs" that you might have.

Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities: If you are a person requesting special needs ( such as accessible parking, sign language interpreter, large print, audio materials) please let know by Sept 26, 2008.

Sounds great!  Sign Me Up!
